15-5 is an age hardening Martensitic stainless steel. The 15-5 PH alloy was designed to have greater toughness than 17-4 PH. The 15-5 PH alloy is martensitic in structure in the annealed condition and is further strengthened by a relatively low temperature heat treatment which precipitates a copper containing phase in the alloy. 15-5 PH is also referred to as XM-12 in some specifications.
My Customer material requirement was 15-5 PH per AMS 5759. An additional requirement was to heat treat to condition H1025 per AMS 2759. I purchased material from the Mill as Cond 1025H but was not certified to AMS2759 for the heat treat.

As for 17-4PH vs 15-5PH, 17-4 was developed in the '50s and 15-5 is a mod of it developed in the '60s (I think). 15-5 has a better microstructure giving it better toughness, especially in the transverse direction.
